St. Patrick's Day

March 17th is St. Patrick's Day, when Americans of Irish ancestry celebrate their history. According to legend, St. Patrick converted Ireland to Christianity and drove all snakes off the island. Many people, Irish or not, like to celebrate the day by getting together and drinking green beer at an Irish pub like this one.
Green, of course, stands for Ireland, the Emerald Isle, and other St. Patrick's Day symbols include shamrocks and leprechauns (little mythological men dressed in green who hide pots of gold at the end of a rainbow). For people not used to the tradition, it is important to know that wearing something green is expected; school children especially like to pinch those people who are not wearing any green on this day.
